I didn’t know what I was going to make when I went into the studio that day, but I knew it was important for me to light up the torch and just get started doing SOMETHING. With a couple of 1/8” welding rods in hand, I began melting metal together.
Early on in the process I thought, “I’ll make a vase.” But then I realized that I like negative space (holes) in my work, and that’s probably not the best design for a vase... I kept welding, and a seed pod emerged; it seems like it’s undulating in a gentle wind or in deep ocean currents. I’l be darned if I didn’t finish the thing, turn it on its side one day, and a blue crab revealed himself to me. This was during the period when I’d make a piece to look like ‘one’ thing but have it ending up looking like ‘two’ things. Happy accidents at work... Comments are closed.
