The ContemporAry Austin’s Five x Seven event was February 26, 2015 at which hundreds of original artworks on 5” x 7” canvases are available for sale for $150 (or $100 for museum members). The bulk of artists submit works on 5 x 7 canvases, hence the name of the event... But sculptors are also welcome to participate. And for sculptors, there is apparently no size limit. Nevertheless, in keeping with the spirit of the fundraiser, I try to keep at least 2 of the 3 dimensions of my piece within the 5” x 7” parameter. What’s in it for me? I get a free year’s membership if I donate a piece to the fundraiser. Also, I enjoy the occasional challenge of creating an original sculpture within a 3-hour time frame. (I’m generous with my time and donations, but there must be limits!)
‘Molten Splash’ is what I came up with. Hmmm, looks a lot like the ‘Flamedrop’ sculpture I made years ago (pictured, far right), but on a much smaller scale. ‘Molten Splash’ measures a diminutive 9” x 2.5” x 2.5”, whereas ‘Flamedrop’ is about 3-feet tall. In years past, I donated 'Fresh Buds' and 'Chirp!' to this annual event. I noticed more sculpture at the Five x Seven event this year than in the past. I particularly noted the presence of more STEEL sculpture. It's good to see metal momentum! Comments are closed.
